Also known as:
Valeriana officinalis
Uses:
• Sleeping problems
• Nervous anxiety and tension
• Stress
Description:
This is a herb which is widely found across Europe. It is one of the oldest
herbs in use and has been the subject of extensive research.
How it works:
The tranquillising action of Valerian has been attributed to a number of components,
including a group of compounds known as valepotriates, which have been shown
to possess an ability to calm the nerves.
Valerenic acid, found in Valerian, inhibits the breakdown of GABA, which is
a chemical transmitter that decreases nervous system activity. Increasing
GABA levels in this way helps people who find it hard to switch off, and promotes
good sleeping patterns.
In addition, a number of other constituents in Valerian have been shown to
possess antispasmodic activity in muscles.
Additional advice:
No restrictions to use are known.
