Also known as:
Humulus lupulus
Uses:
• Insomnia
Description:
The plant Humulus is a climber which can be found in swamps and in the hedges
of our cultivated gardens. Being an important ingredient in beer, it is extensively
cultivated commercially. Hops has a long history of use in Phytotherapy. It
was listed in the US Pharmacopoeia from 1831 to 1916 as a sedative.
How it works:
Hops contain substances known as humulones and lupulones. These are broken
down in the body to substances which have a distinct sedative effect on the
nervous system. This effect is useful for insomnia, especially when combined
with the herb Valerian.
Sedative herbs such as these are particularly effective when the causes of
insomnia include nervous tension and anxiety.
Additional advice:
No restrictions on use are known.
